Mani to Resurrect Roses SUNDAY MAIL - 2 October 2005
STONE Roses’ star Mani has vowed to reform the legendary band - even if it means banging warring Ian Brown and John Squire’s heads together. The bassist - a member of Primal Scream - wants the Roses to record a new album and play live again.
Mani said: “Ian and John are still not speaking. I’m going to do my utmost to get them to patch things up. “I don’t like seeing those guys fall out - it’s bloody undignified. The way the Roses ended in 1995 wasn’t good. For a band who had a real gang mentality, there was a lot of animosity between us. We’ve got to put our differences behind us.”
Mani claims the Roses have been offered vast sums of money to play again - but cash isn’t an incentive. He said: “We’d have to record a great new album to justify getting back together. John Squire, Reni and me are bang up for a reunion. “But Ian has become a big fish in his own pond. I don’t think he feels the need to do it.”
In the meantime, Mani reckons fans should support The Complete Stone Roses - the Scots tribute band due to embark on a 35-date tour. you can see them at Glasgow’s Carling Academy on November 25, followed by gigs in December at Edinburgh Liquid Rooms (9), Dingwall Rock (26), Dundee Fat Sam’s (28) and Aberdeen Lemon Tree (30).
Mani reckons they are even better than the real thing. He said: “There have been three different line-ups - but this lot are definitely the best. I’m all for anything which keeps the Roses’ music alive. They do our songs real justice. At times, they play even better than we did. Some nights we’d get so walloped before going on stage. They keep their partying until after the show.” Mani has guested with both previous line-ups and he can’t wait to appear on stage with the new one. He said: “Their attention to detail is amazing. The bass I use - a Rickenbacker 3000 - is as rare as rocking horse s***... but they’ve found one.”
